00:00:00
- Two, one.
00:00:02
(structure explodes) (people shouting)
00:00:04
- This is me reclaiming my title
00:00:06
for the world's largest and tallest
00:00:08
elephant toothpaste experiment,
00:00:10
and this is a totally different kind of reaction
00:00:12
we discovered in all our experimentation
00:00:14
called Devil's Toothpaste,
00:00:16
which is insanely reactive and super dangerous.
00:00:19
I'll explain why in a minute, but for now, here's a hint.
00:00:23
(loud explosion) (glass shattering)
00:00:26
Wow.
00:00:27
And if you look closely in both shots,
00:00:29
I'm not holding the trigger.
00:00:31
This kid is.
00:00:32
In fact, that kid was the whole reason
00:00:34
we were there at all because this was a culmination
00:00:36
of eight months of planning
00:00:38
to throw him the most epic birthday party ever.
00:00:40
And all of this started inadvertently
00:00:43
from a single surprise phone call.
00:00:45
(phone ringing)
00:00:49
What's up, Fletcher?
00:00:52
- Oh my God.
00:00:53
(Mark laughs)
00:00:59
- What's going on, buddy?
00:01:04
- What?
00:01:05
(Mark laughs)
00:01:07
- How are things, man?
00:01:08
- They just got better.
00:01:10
- This is Fletcher, and this is also Fletcher
00:01:13
a year before this call.
00:01:15
But unbeknownst to everyone at the time, also pictured here
00:01:18
under all that amazing hair, was a fast-growing brain tumor.
00:01:22
They eventually realized something was wrong
00:01:23
and discovered it was a dangerous form of brain cancer
00:01:26
so rare he was only the sixth kid ever known to have had it.
00:01:29
So his family uprooted their lives for a year
00:01:31
and moved almost a thousand miles
00:01:33
to be closer to St. Jude where they removed the tumor
00:01:35
and would try and fix his brain.
00:01:37
In fact, our call was the night before he was going back in
00:01:40
for another brutal week of chemo.
00:01:42
He's such a funny kid, and I was so inspired
00:01:44
by his hopeful attitude that after talking for an hour,
00:01:47
I secretly vowed that if he made it to 13 years old,
00:01:49
I would fly him and his family out and surprise him
00:01:52
with just the dopest birthday party ever.
00:01:55
And not long after, I texted Fletcher this picture.
00:01:57
So he knew we had closely matching hairstyles,
00:02:00
but what he didn't know is that plans were already underway
00:02:03
for him and I to take back the record
00:02:05
for the world's largest elephant toothpaste.
00:02:07
And as a quick refresher, last summer,
00:02:09
my buddy Science Bob and I set the world record
00:02:11
for elephant toothpaste by filling up
00:02:13
an empty swimming pool.
00:02:15
I wanted to be able to swim in the foam afterwards.
00:02:17
So we figured out how to use yeast as the catalyst,
00:02:19
which is in fact safer, but it doesn't react very fast,
00:02:23
and our video seemed to inspire some folks
00:02:25
because two months later,
00:02:26
this happened in David Dobrik's backyard
00:02:28
where they didn't bother with the yeast
00:02:30
and just took the normal reaction and scaled it up a bunch.
00:02:33
But then a few weeks later,
00:02:34
these guys in Brazil did the largest experiment yet,
00:02:36
and they are the current Guinness World record holders.
00:02:39
And so even though Fletcher's birthday
00:02:40
was still eight months out,
00:02:41
we started our testing right away
00:02:43
because I knew blasting a world record amount of foam
00:02:46
straight up into the sky wasn't as easy as it might sound,
00:02:49
and the part that concerned me the most
00:02:51
was picking the right nozzle size,
00:02:53
and here's what I mean.
00:02:54
These three containers are identical
00:02:56
except for the diameter of their outlets.
00:02:59
If that diameter is too large, it looks kind of cool,
00:03:02
but it doesn't really go that high,
00:03:03
Too small, and it will go high,
00:03:06
but it just looks like confetti,
00:03:08
and it doesn't look that impressive.
00:03:10
But for every container,
00:03:11
there is a Goldilocks size diameter opening
00:03:14
that gives you that cool laminar-looking flow
00:03:16
while still going pretty high.
00:03:18
And you might think, "Well, why don't you just take
00:03:19
a typical flask that works so well
00:03:21
and just scale all the dimensions up?"
00:03:22
And we tried that on our first five foot scale test.
00:03:26
(contraption whooshes)
00:03:29
And just as I feared, it went all confetti on us,
00:03:32
and the problem is illustrated here.
00:03:33
If you wanna scale up
00:03:34
and double all the dimensions of the block, you get this.
00:03:38
That's perfect. All these dimensions increased exactly by a factor of two.
00:03:42
But wait a sec, the volume increased by a factor of eight.
00:03:45
This is called the squared-cube law
00:03:47
and its effects are everywhere in nature,
00:03:49
such as putting a hard limit on just how big
00:03:52
land animals can be because how heavy you are
00:03:54
is a function of your volume,
00:03:56
but the strength of your muscles and bones
00:03:58
is a function of their cross-sectional area.
00:04:01
So since animals evolved to get heavier
00:04:03
by the power of three, but stronger by only
00:04:05
the power of two, at some point it's just too much.
00:04:09
So on the next five foot test, we increase the top diameter
00:04:12
by a mere three and a half inches.
00:04:14
But now the pendulum swung too far the other way
00:04:16
because while the column looked smooth,
00:04:18
it didn't really go that high.
00:04:19
And so finally for the third test,
00:04:21
we let the pendulum swing back just a tad,
00:04:23
and shaved down that diameter by just over an inch
00:04:26
to try and dial in that Goldilocks outlet size.
00:04:29
And sure enough, the column went really high
00:04:31
and looked great, but this test uncovered another issue.
00:04:35
With such a high volume of foam, the pressure was creating
00:04:37
some really high forces in the flask.
00:04:39
I mean, that's a lotta damage,
00:04:42
which quite frankly, left us with only one option.
00:04:45
(upbeat dramatic music)
00:04:51
And so with the Power Flex Tape, we scale things up
00:04:53
even further to a 10 foot test, and did our best
00:04:56
to interpolate that Goldilocks outlet size.
00:05:00
Oh my God!
00:05:01
(contraption explodes)
00:05:08
So once again, the outlet size worked great,
00:05:10
but our joint construction wasn't prepared
00:05:12
for the further scaled up forces.
00:05:14
In fact, score a fat W for the Flex Tape
00:05:17
where you could see it single handedly
00:05:19
held the thing together
00:05:20
even as the screws and wood busted through.
00:05:23
And we were realizing we just had to make
00:05:25
the structure so over-engineered and indestructible,
00:05:28
so the only option for the foam to escape the high pressure
00:05:31
would be going out the top.
00:05:32
And so while that wasn't a perfect result,
00:05:34
I felt like we'd learned enough from all of our failures
00:05:36
to design it strong enough for the final
00:05:38
20 foot world record version.
00:05:41
In the end, we ran over 150 tests,
00:05:43
not only to determine the right scaled up flask dimensions,
00:05:46
but things like does neck length have an effect?
00:05:48
What happens if you vary the soap amounts?
00:05:51
What effect do different brands of food coloring have?
00:05:55
All of these tests were really insightful,
00:05:57
but perhaps the most interesting finding
00:05:59
was stumbling upon something
00:06:00
I've affectionately named Devil's Toothpaste.
00:06:03
Now you might be thinking, "Devil's Toothpaste?
00:06:05
That seems a bit extreme, Mark."
00:06:07
But allow me to demonstrate.
00:06:08
This is a shoebox full of the standard formula
00:06:10
of hydrogen peroxide, sodium iodide, and soap
00:06:13
that pretty much everyone uses to make elephant toothpaste.
00:06:16
Now here's the same volume of reactants,
00:06:18
only this time using Devil's Toothpaste.
00:06:21
Now see if you could spot the difference in real time.
00:06:26
(Mark chuckles)
00:06:30
Not only is it hyper reactive,
00:06:31
but the reaction is much hotter
00:06:33
so you get these really cool bubble formations.
00:06:36
Here's one more.
00:06:37
Once again, this is normal elephant's toothpaste
00:06:39
in an Erlenmeyer flask.
00:06:40
No big deal, people have been doing this for years.
00:06:43
But once again, here's the same volume of reactants,
00:06:46
now only with Devil's Toothpaste.
00:06:48
(glass shattering) (Devil's Toothpaste explodes)
00:06:52
And given how explosive this is,
00:06:53
this may be irresponsible of me,
00:06:55
but while we watch the replay,
00:06:56
I'll tell you exactly how to make it.
00:06:58
You start with (beep).
00:07:00
Once that mixes, you're gonna (beep).
00:07:03
Oprah Winfrey. (beep)
00:07:05
Torch on the leftover rabbit fur, and you're good to go.
00:07:08
And so by taking some rigorous safety precautions,
00:07:11
we also intended to set the first and therefore,
00:07:14
only world record for the world's largest
00:07:16
Devil's Toothpaste experiment by filling six 55 gallon drums
00:07:20
with 400 times the amount that broke the flask here.
00:07:23
And so after 150 tests and eight months of work,
00:07:26
feeling much more confident
00:07:27
about our build plans and chemistry,
00:07:29
we packed everything up and made our way
00:07:32
to the small farming town of Gridley, California.
00:07:34
We chose Gridley because our family friend, Dale,
00:07:37
graciously agreed to let us use his land,
00:07:39
which is full of hundreds of acres of walnut trees.
00:07:42
No, don't even think about it, fat Gus.
00:07:45
He also had a great backyard we could make use of,
00:07:48
and so with only four days left
00:07:49
'til Fletcher was flying out for the party,
00:07:51
we got to work on a 20 second build montage.
00:07:55
(upbeat bright music)
00:08:14
And it took four consecutive 14 hour
00:08:17
backbreaking days of labor in the hot sun
00:08:18
because with so much time to plan
00:08:20
the most epic birthday party ever,
00:08:21
I just kept adding more and more ideas
00:08:23
to the list we would need to pull off.
00:08:25
So in addition to building the indestructible 20 foot flask
00:08:27
and the Devil's Toothpaste dumping mechanism,
00:08:29
we also needed to make a methane bubble fountain,
00:08:31
a 3D bubble printer, a fire tornado,
00:08:34
a slip and slide into a pool, and an epic bubble pit.
00:08:37
And even though I brought my buddies,
00:08:38
it was cool to see this turn into a modern day,
00:08:40
small town USA barn raising.
00:08:42
If we needed extra hands or a piece of equipment,
00:08:44
10 neighbors were there like instantly to help us out.
00:08:47
And so the morning of the big day,
00:08:48
there was still a lot of last minute scrambling,
00:08:50
but things were looking pretty good.
00:08:52
I'm seriously so nervous right now.
00:08:54
I love pranks, and a surprise is like,
00:08:57
the most wholesome type of prank.
00:08:58
So I haven't been able to sleep for days
00:09:00
just thinking about this,
00:09:02
like every last detail to how this will go down.
00:09:04
And so with only one hour left,
00:09:06
we did one final test run on everything.
00:09:08
First, the Devil's Toothpaste.
00:09:11
A perfecto.
00:09:12
And then the 20 foot flask.
00:09:15
For the real reaction, the peroxide would fill
00:09:17
the whole bottom pool where John was standing,
00:09:19
and then the troughs would dump over
00:09:20
all the catalyst at once sort of like this.
00:09:22
And I should mention, Guinness only lets you choose
00:09:24
one world record category per event.
00:09:26
So we're going for the tallest,
00:09:28
but when we did the math to scale up the flask
00:09:30
to the arbitrary height I picked of 20 feet,
00:09:32
and this is a true story, it was exactly one gallon less
00:09:36
than the folks in Brazil
00:09:37
who set the world record for the largest.
00:09:39
And so don't mind me while I set
00:09:41
these two gallon containers right here.
00:09:43
And so as people started gathering for the surprise,
00:09:45
I hit the hardened streets of Gridley, California
00:09:47
to look for some kind of last minute disguise.
00:09:54
And so after a bit of a warmup,
00:09:55
'cause these are all moves I can for sure do,
00:09:57
and that's definitely me in the costume,
00:09:59
the moment I had spent the last eight months planning for
00:10:01
had finally arrived.
00:10:04
And the cover story for the kids is they were coming to tour
00:10:07
a walnut farm of a distant relative.
00:10:10
- [People] Surprise!
00:10:16
- And to provide a good juxtaposition,
00:10:18
I wanted him to feel as awkward as possible for this part.
00:10:23
And then when we gathered for the picture,
00:10:24
I snuck up right behind him and took off my mask.
00:10:28
All right. Cool.
00:10:30
What do you guys wanna do next?
00:10:33
What should we do?
00:10:37
His sister, Aila, also had no idea
00:10:39
any of this was gonna happen.
00:10:41
- [Fletcher] Oh my gosh.
00:10:44
- You're kidding. - What up, buddy?
00:10:47
- You're kidding me. - How are you?
00:10:48
Get in here.
00:10:56
What's up, dude?
00:10:58
- You are kidding me.
00:10:59
- When I'm not making videos, I'm the Gridley mascot.
00:11:03
- Mascot?
00:11:04
To really stretch out the surprise,
00:11:06
I wanted to think I was only there to drop in and say hi.
00:11:08
So I had Dale suggest that I take the kids
00:11:10
for a ride in his dune buggy, to which I reluctantly agreed
00:11:13
'cause, you know, I'm a busy guy.
00:11:15
I could do it.
00:11:16
Like, 15 minutes.
00:11:17
You guys wanna go for a Razor ride?
00:11:18
Is that cool?
00:11:20
Lets get the whole crew, your sister.
00:11:22
I had about like a half an hour.
00:11:23
So it's good to meet you in real life.
00:11:26
- Yeah.
00:11:27
- Yeah, let's go!
00:11:28
(upbeat bright music)
00:11:33
Don't tell mom!
00:11:34
- Not a word!
00:11:35
- Not a word, okay!
00:11:37
Watch out for walnuts.
00:11:42
A single walnut grows in one of these,
00:11:43
which is crazy to me.
00:11:45
All of those are just a single walnut.
00:11:53
As we pulled up the driveway, I stopped the dune buggy
00:11:55
in a precisely predetermined location
00:11:57
where the view of the 20 foot flask
00:11:59
was obscured by the truck.
00:12:00
I heard it was your birthday, so I got you something simple.
00:12:02
- [Fletcher] Well, tomorrow's my real birthday.
00:12:04
- Oh yeah, tomorrow. I'm one day off.
00:12:08
So Fletch, I've gotta come clean, buddy.
00:12:14
You and I today are gonna set a Guinness World record
00:12:17
for the world's tallest elephant toothpaste.
00:12:19
- Wait, what?
00:12:20
- Are you kidding me?
00:12:21
- You are currently in a YouTube video.
00:12:24
I want you to wave to 20 million of your newest friends.
00:12:28
- Hello.
00:12:30
- We're gonna put all the elephant toothpaste in,
00:12:33
and just blast it in the air.
00:12:35
- Yeah, I got 15 minutes.
00:12:39
- I actually fully cleared my schedule.
00:12:42
- Oh my God.
00:12:44
- With the surprise fully and successfully executed,
00:12:47
my heart rate finally lowered a bit,
00:12:49
and I gave them a preview of all the cool stuff
00:12:51
we had lined up for the party.
00:12:52
Then we headed to the backyard
00:12:54
where he saw the setup, and his mom.
00:12:56
- You are devious.
00:12:59
- Because at this point it had sunk in
00:13:00
there would be no Walnut farm tour,
00:13:02
and that her and I had been conspiring for months.
00:13:07
For now though, it was time to party.
00:13:10
(upbeat modern music)
00:13:25
(upbeat modern music continues)
00:13:43
- Nice bubble party, Mark Rober.
00:13:46
(upbeat modern music)
00:14:19
- Before we busted out the flaming bubbles
00:14:21
or the bubble pit, we headed across the street
00:14:23
to check out the world's first, and therefore largest,
00:14:26
Devil's toothpaste experiment.
00:14:30
Here we go, Fletcher!
00:14:32
Three, two, one!
00:14:35
(Devil's Toothpaste explodes)
00:14:53
- [Fletcher] It worked!
00:14:55
I didn't screw it up.
00:14:58
- Science Bob came over and hooked us up
00:15:00
with the slow-mo shot.
00:15:01
Whoa!
00:15:27
This shot was from a GoPro on rails,
00:15:29
and we weren't quite fast enough with the pole.
00:15:31
And for some reason I found this
00:15:32
like Wall-E level pathetically sad.
00:15:35
You can see even in slow-mo,
00:15:37
the reaction happened so incredibly fast.
00:15:46
And I apologize for the gratuitous amount of slow-mo,
00:15:49
but this has got to be the coolest thing I've ever filmed.
00:16:08
And afterwards, it kept oozing
00:16:09
this rainbow Play-Doh extrusion thing.
00:16:12
(upbeat music)
00:16:25
It just looked like some kind of whimsical alien landscape.
00:16:30
And as you can see, over time,
00:16:31
it just sort of deflates itself.
00:16:33
And after that, we went back and ate some dinner
00:16:35
and had some amazing, and not at all creepy army
00:16:38
of Fletcher face cupcakes,
00:16:39
while the crew started prepping
00:16:41
for the big world record finale.
00:16:42
And in the vein of cool stuff I would need to have
00:16:44
at my birthday party if I was turning 13 years old,
00:16:47
I, of course, had to bust out the Elon Musk flamethrower
00:16:49
to light some fire bubbles.
00:16:51
And finally, it was back to the front yard
00:16:52
to top things off with the most amazing bubble pit ever.
00:16:55
It was like belly flopping on a cloud.
00:16:59
(upbeat music)
00:17:08
And at this point, we realized it was taking way longer
00:17:09
to fill up than we had calculated.
00:17:12
So it was all hands on deck to try and pull this off
00:17:14
before the sun went down.
00:17:15
Oh, and this is cool.
00:17:17
The bubble pit was dual purpose because once emptied,
00:17:20
it served as the bunker to give a completely safe
00:17:23
front row seat to whatever was about to happen.
00:17:25
And so with the flask really close to being filled,
00:17:27
Fletcher asked to take a very quick
00:17:29
last minute ride in the Tesla 'cause he'd never been in one.
00:17:32
- This one.
00:17:33
This is in like, every video.
00:17:35
- You guys are in a Mark Rober video.
00:17:38
For the request, I gave them a quick ride.
00:17:41
(passengers scream)
00:17:48
- Look out!
00:17:49
- Autopilot.
00:17:52
- Oh my God!
00:17:53
- The weird part is like it said,
00:17:54
and I have a conversation with you, Fletcher,
00:17:57
and this feels very freaky, but you trust. (screams)
00:17:59
Remember our story, all right?
00:18:01
10 miles an hour tops.
00:18:02
And so with the official measurement drone in the air,
00:18:04
our timing was perfect because we made it back
00:18:06
just as they were sealing up the door for the big moment.
00:18:09
Okay, Fletcher, I'm handing this to you officially.
00:18:12
To think you should have been touring
00:18:13
a walnut farm right now.
00:18:15
And so after eight months of planning
00:18:17
and so much work by so many people,
00:18:19
the coolest birthday present I've ever given anybody
00:18:22
came down to this moment.
00:18:24
Here we go.
00:18:25
Three, two, one.
00:18:28
(people shouting) (Devil's Toothpaste explodes)
00:19:07
- It worked!
00:19:08
- It went from the bottom.
00:19:12
- Came up the bottom, and lifted it up!
00:19:15
Look at my truck!
00:19:17
Let's go.
00:19:18
- Oh my God.
00:19:19
- What you guys think?
00:19:20
- So cool. - That floated
00:19:22
from the bottom.
00:19:23
- Look at the truck, it's like buried next to it.
00:19:27
(upbeat music)
00:19:36
Boom!
00:19:39
(Devil's toothpaste gurgling)
00:19:52
(soft gentle music)
00:20:00
And I'd just like to point out
00:20:02
how great that flowing column looks
00:20:04
with a perfectly selected outlet diameter.
00:20:06
That is, until things got chaotic
00:20:08
once the pressure changed drastically from the big rupture.
00:20:12
(soft gentle music)
00:20:23
We literally made a rocket ship.
00:20:25
I mean, fundamentally, this is how
00:20:27
rockets propel themselves.
00:20:28
And the actual failure mode
00:20:29
wasn't really a floor strength issue,
00:20:31
as much as it was a stiffness issue.
00:20:32
I knew our structure weighed over a ton,
00:20:34
so I just didn't consider that the reaction
00:20:36
could lift the whole thing five feet into the freaking air.
00:20:39
And in NASA, that's what we refer to as
00:20:41
a critical oversight.
00:20:42
But honestly, this result was way more spectacular.
00:20:45
Plus, it leaves room for improvement,
00:20:47
and I should also note, even with all that,
00:20:49
we still crushed the previous world record
00:20:51
by more than double.
00:20:52
And so as the sun went down,
00:20:54
Science Bob lit up the fire tornado
00:20:56
as a fitting end to the party.
00:21:00
I also told Fletcher there was one more thing,
00:21:02
which is that with a little help from Dale,
00:21:04
he could use some heavy equipment
00:21:05
to destroy our beautiful creation.
00:21:14
And so with that, the party was all over.
00:21:18
That was epic.
00:21:19
I'll never forget this.
00:21:20
- [Mom] Thank you.
00:21:21
Thank you, Mark.
00:21:22
- [Mark] As they drove away, I thought about everything
00:21:23
they'd been through for the past year,
00:21:25
and all the people that came together
00:21:27
from all across the country to donate their time and energy
00:21:30
for a kid they've never even met.
00:21:33
And I might not vote the exact same as all of them,
00:21:36
but for like five inspiring days,
00:21:39
none of that stuff mattered.
00:21:40
Whenever I find myself short on hope,
00:21:42
I find it helps to put my phone down
00:21:44
and choose to see the good parts in my fellow humans,
00:21:48
and be one of the good parts for my fellow humans to see.
00:21:51
And so to Fletcher, thank you for being such a good example
00:21:54
of holding onto hope amidst really lame circumstances.
00:21:58
Happy birthday, buddy,
00:21:59
and congrats on your new world record.
